US$300 Million to Close Guantanamo
02 February 2010

WASHINGTON, 2 Feb – US President Barack Obama`s allocation of more than US$300 million to shut down the detention centre of Guantanamo has created many controversies.

In presenting the budget to Congress yesterday, an amount of US$237 was allocated to open the Thomson Prison facility at Illinois, to transfer hundreds of detainees from Guantanamo Bay.

In the meantime, US$73 million was allocated to bear the cost of five men charged with planning the 11 September 2001 terrorist attack.

The step to develop and to take over the Thomson prison as the main prison is part of the planning by the Obama administration to shut down Guantanamo.

The Obama administration has improved facilities at Illinois making it the prison with the best security equipment in one building to house Guantanamo detainees.

That section will be managed directly by the Pentagon and will manage trials of detainees in the United States as well as house more than 100 other prisoners detained without trial.
