Sheikh Taqiyuddin An-Nabhani (1909-1977) was a judge, poet, an expert in literature, and a well known Islamic scholar in the Othmaniyah Empire. His full name is Sheikh Muhammad Taqiyyuddin bin Ibrahim bin Musthafa bin Ismail bin Yusuf An-Nabhani.
He was born in the district of Ijzim. Sheikh An-Nabhani came from the tribe of Bani Nabhan which included Arabs, residents of the Sahara Desert in Palestine. They resided in the district of Ijzim which included the region of Haifa in North Palestine.
EDUCATION
Sheikh Taqiyuddin was educated in ShariŽah and Islam at home by his father and grandfather. His father was a scholar in Žfaqih fid dinŽ (knowledgeable of Islam) as well as a teacher of ShariŽah at the Palestinian Ministry of Education. His grandfather had taught the memorization of the QurŽan until he had memorized the holy book before he reached the age of puberty. His mother was also qualified in several branches of ShariŽah, which she acquired from her father, Sheikh Yusuf bin Ismail bin Yusuf An-Nabhani.
Apart from this Sheikh Taqiyyuddin also acquired education at state schools when he studied at primary school in Ijzim. The development of Sheikh Taqiyyuddin in such a religious environment resulted in the development of his character and thoughts in life. He memorized the QurŽan before he had reached the age of 13.
Later Sheikh Taqiyyuddin transferred to a secondary school at Akka to further his studies. Before ending his schooling at Akka he went to Cairo to continue his secondary schools studies at University Al-Azhar, in 1928, as a result of his grandfatherŽs support, and during the same year obtained good results. He then continued his studies at Darul Ulum, which at the time was a branch of University Al-Azhar.
While doing so he also attended may knowledgeable sessions at University Al-Azhar which were conducted by scholars of the university. These included Sheikh Muhammad Al-Hidlir Husaain, as was recommended by his grandfather.
Sheikh Taqiyyuddin completed his studies at Darul Ulum in 1932. During the same year he also completed his lectures at Al-Azhar Asy-Syarif according to the old system, where students could choose several Al-Azhar Sheikhs and attend their sessions concerning Arabic Language studies and studies such as Fiqh, Hadith, Tafsir, Tawheed etc.
Sheikh Taqiyyuddin An-Nabhani was known amongst his friends and close colleagues from amongst the intellectuals of University Al-Azhar as a person who was a genius, possessing strong views and deep understanding, as well as the potential to convince others during a debate or discussion on thought.
In the same manner, he was thoroughly committed, determined and full of zest in making use of time to acquire knowledge
CAREER
On completing his studies, Sheikh Taqiyyuddin returned to Palestine to work with the Ministry of Education as a teacher at a secondary school in Haifa. At the same time, he also taught at Madrasah Islamiah in Haifa.
In the year 1940, Sheikh Taqiyyuddin was appointed as an assistant judge and he continued to hold the position until 1945, when he shifted to Ramallah to become judge at the Ramallah Court until the year 1948.
After that he left Ramallah and went to Syria after the collapse of Palestine to the Jews. In 1948 he returned. His companion, Ustaz Anwar Al-Khatib had sent him a letter calling upon him to return to Palestine to be appointed judge at the Al-Quds ShariŽah Court. Syeikh Taqiyyuddin fulfilled the request of his friend and was appointed to the post in the year 1948.
In 1951, Sheikh Taqiyyuddin visited the city of Amman to deliver a speech to the students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah at Kulliyah Ilmiyah Islamiah. This phenomenon ended in early 1953, when he was just beginning to get involved with Hizbut Tahrir of which he was a pioneer between the year 1949 to 1953.
As a young man, Sheikh Taqiyyuddin had began his political career as a result of his grandfatherŽs influence. That experience enabled him to establish an Islamic political party, the Hizbut Tahrir di Al-Quds Party in the year 1953. Sheikh Taqiyyuddin died in the year 1977/1398 Hijrah and is buried at Al-AuzaŽi in Beirut, Lebanon.
