Mosques Need to Be Strengthened as Institutions in Building Communities

IPOH – Mosques need to be strengthened as institutions that play a significant role in building communities, not just as places of worship, but also as arenas of knowledge, economic development, unity of the ummah, and drivers of humanitarian agendas.

This idea became one of the main points highlighted in the Regional Mosque Conference 2026 themed “Empowering the Global Ummah: Unity, Welfare, and Liberation of Al-Quds” held in Ipoh on August 30.

This conference was officiated by the President of YADIM, Datuk Dr Hasan Bahrom, representing the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), the Honourable Senator Dr. Zulkifli Hasan. Also present was the Director of YADIM Perak, Ustaz Ramdani Abd Karim.

YADIM views such efforts as an important step in expanding the role of mosques to be more responsive to community needs and current issues, while also building a stronger network of ummah cooperation across borders.

The conference organized by the Malaysian Islamic Organizations Consultative Council (MAPIM) in collaboration with the Perak Islamic Religious Department (JAIPk) also showcased the commitment of various parties to build a more organized and dynamic network of mosques in addressing ummah issues at the regional and global levels.

Among the initiatives highlighted are the 10 Strategic Agendas and Action Plans for the Regional Mosque 2026–2030, in addition to strengthening the South East Asia Mosque Alliance for Al Aqsa and Palestine (SEAMAP/GAMAP) focusing on community welfare, governance, advocacy for Palestine, and the utilization of digital technology.

YADIM expresses appreciation to the President of MAPIM, Cikgu Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid, and the entire organizing committee for hosting the conference that opens important avenues for strengthening the role of mosques as strategic institutions for community development.

The Regional Mosque Conference 2026 with the theme “Empowering the Global Ummah: Unity, Welfare, and Liberation of Al-Aqsa” gathered mosque leadership, scholars, and community activists from the Southeast Asian region.

This conference, which took place on August 29 and 30, was attended by 200 participants including from Singapore, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Turkey, involving activities such as conferences, a Palestinian and Al-Aqsa Charity Gala Night, and lectures.
